The Macau Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) has reported a sharp rise in gambling disorder cases in the first half of 2024, with 108 cases registered, compared to 169 for the entire 2023.
Breakdown Of Gambling Disorder Cases:
Among the 108 cases, a small percentage (1%) involved gaming industry dealers, while 4.3% were related to other gambling-related jobs. Financial stress was the leading motivation for 24.1% of those seeking help, followed by entertainment (21%) and alleviating boredom or depression (17%). Baccarat was the most addictive game, cited by 47% of problematic players.
Demographics And Response Strategies:
Most affected individuals are aged 30-39, with 40% being tourists. IAS plans to enhance responsible gambling messaging, especially targeting tourists, and collaborate with local businesses to increase awareness of support services.
